An Investigation of Syrian Conflict Photography on Flickr

The Arab Spring of 2011 saw the employment of social media, and contributed to the way in which photojournalists, citizen witnesses, and activists mediate and represent struggles and conflict in the Middle East (Allan, 2013). Looking particularly at Syria, the visual construction of the conflict is ever more present, and images of the war have become more common, as we now live in a world that is constructed more readily through imagery. Images are circulated with an unprecedented speed on global New Media outlets such as Facebook, Flickr and Twitter instantaneously (Anden-Papadopoulos and Pantti, 2013). Activists and citizen journalists have worked to gain public attention to fight against the Assad regime in Syria, largely through access to social media sites. In the process, activist groups such as Lens Young Dimashqi seek to record and document the conflict through photographic images of life during wartime.

63% of social media consists of images. Systematic studies of social media & virality focus on other concerns. When they address social media images, they cite meta-characteristics such as emotive content or appeal to specific demographics. However, there appears to be little analysis of their visual content, including those images shared so widely that they are deemed “viral”. This practice-based enquiry examines design and manufacturing possibilities using 3D printed PET filament for menswear. rPET filament is a recycled material usually made from plastic bottles, in this enquiry I will test the feasibility of recycled polyester clothing. ‘Closed Loop’ is a complex system involving a seamless interaction between manufacture, consuming and recycling.

Deep Surface: A practice based enquiry of the picture plane.

How do we understand the active interchange between the outer face of an artwork and its inward-facing components, be these a design, a trace or a generating framework?

Over the course of the PhD enquiry I aim to interrogate physically through the making of artworks and theoretically, through a contextual underpinning, the depth of surface as a dense, complex and vacillating plane. The research aims to unpick the interplay between the outer public layer and the structure below, contributing to a new understanding of the picture plane within two dimensional Fine Art practice.

Ibrik: Invigorating Cultural Heritage Within a Contemporary Context Through Redesign

The ibrik is a traditional Lebanese spouted water vessel with ties to Lebanese cultural heritage. Its production started as early as the Phoenician period in the Mediterranean area. While this object was once common to every household in Lebanon, today the ibrik is rarely used as intended. It either no longer exists or serves merely as decoration. The following project aims to redesign the ibrik through its animated cultural heritage as a craft and as a drinking vessel by embedding it with a contemporary visual dynamism.

Thread offers a particular narrative voice that can be appropriated for feminine needs of concealed meaning, but I will argue that it also serves to clarify the movement between metaphor and realisation that is essential to artistic creation.

Opening up the Wig: An exploration of the wig using photographic and sculptural strategies to reveal the relationships between the wig, the self, society and the construction of female identities.

My practice is situated in the intersection between sculpture and studio-based photography and will employ a range of strategies to unpack the function and definition of the wig, and interrogate the social context that currently produces and values it. This will involve investigating both the intention of the wig – representing, idealising and projecting the ‘feminine’ – and its material origins – the physicality of it and the cultural context that produces it. The female wig in particular offers a space for public and private ideas of femininity to interact. Women’s wigs can act as a metonym for the female body as both an artificial construct (the ideal female body), and an absence (the intended wearer, or, in the case of natural hair, the persons whose hair it was).

The transferware engraver; practice, scope and impact at the Spode Works

This research will examine the role of the copper-plate engraver in the transfer-printed ceramic industry, notably the process of image selection, use and modification. The literature on transfer-printed pottery is largely orientated to the collector and researched by collectors and dealers. Investigations have mainly dealt with factory identification, date, pattern derivation and evaluation of merit and value. My theoretical approach is one of scientific connoisseurship, material culture studies and new art history that includes the social and cultural context. Ultimately, the research will provide justification for saving and preserving the Spode copper plate archive.
